It is often said that high school should
allow its students to select classes which they want to study because freedom
of choosing what they learn would make them motivated to study hard. However, I
believe that students should take subjects that the school requires them to
take for two reasons: creating only essential courses is cost-efficient and guarantee
future employment.
To begin with, offering common subjects to
its students plays a significant role in operating the school in better
financial conditions. This is because the school should spend more money on
creating new courses that students want to choose. Therefore, students have
more chances to have qualified classes with the limited budget of the school.
According to the Ministry of Education of Korea in 2012, a study was conducted in
two high schools. “A” school only required common courses to their students; on
the other hand, “B” school provided chances to select courses whatever their
students want. The latter school had to create more classes and hire more
teachers because students required a number of classes. As a result, the school
had faced budget problem, resulting in the low-quality of education. This shows
that allowing students to choose subjects has negative impact on school’s financial
status.
In addition, high school should provide
their students fundamental and necessary courses in order to ensure them to get
more qualified jobs. It is obvious that students should learn basic courses
such as mathematics, language, and science since they provide useful knowledge
which can be used in future workplace. Thus, these courses make students to be
well-equipped with knowledge necessary for professional working as well as to get
a job they want. For example, my youngest brother had attended a various kinds
of private academies such as art and music when he was in high school. He didn’t
care about the basic courses that the school offered, and lacked pivotal
knowledge provided by school teachers. After graduation, he applied various
kinds of job positions, but the companies required applicants to have essential
knowledge about math and science. As a result, he had a hard time getting a job
and it took about 7 years for him to get a job. This shows that essential
knowledge provided by high school education is necessary for students to have
work positions they want.
In brief, students should not be given
chances to choose what they learn in school since it is financially ineffective
for the school and time-consuming for the students in job application. If young
people want to learn uncommon knowledge, it is better to participate in other
activities such as extracurricular and social activities. |
