There has been an ongoing debate over the issue that it is better for university students to first get a general education, taking classes in many fields, than it is for them to take classes only in their field of study. I agree with the former stance because of two reasons: it helps you improve creativity and know one's aptitude.
First of all, I think that studying variety of fields allows students to foster their creativity. Moreover, it connected success in one's life because various fields of knowledges are important to success. For instance, Steve Jobs who was an CEO of Apple company, studied graphonomy, not his major, that was significant base to his early success.
Secondly, it is good to find whose aptitude. Every students want to have a job well-fitted with him but this is very difficult to find his aptitude even he already determined his major in university. Through the studying variously, you can know what is you like and what is you do well. For example, in my case, when I was a university student, my major was management. One day, I was in a computer class, an elective course, and it was a huge stimulus for me to change my major to computer science makes me happy. Finally, I am a computer programmer now.
To sum up, everyone may hold a different position on this issue. But in my case, all things considered, I firmly believe that it is better to study in many fields in university. |
