The conflicting issue between the writer
and the lecturer is replacing traditional library with digital library. The
writer insists that digital library is good for its accessibility, convenience,
and intellectual world. On the other hand, the lecturer argues negatively about
digital library because of unfairness, waste of time, and problem of intellectual
property.
First of all, the lecturer points out that
digital library brings unfair situation among citizens. This is because using
digital library needs computer. However, there are hundreds of people who are
poor and they cannot easily afford to use computer. Purchasing a computer
brings monetary problem, thus this bars poor people to buy a computer.
Furthermore, poor people usually have not chance to learn how to use computer.
Therefore, the reading passage's assertion that using digital library enables
people to access books more easily is illusion for poor people.
In second, the lecturer says that using
digital library is just time-consuming. Finding jewels in a big ocean makes
people exhausted. There are uncountable materials available in digital library.
Gigantic amount of digital library materials will overwhelm people. This
counters the reading passage's claim that digital library is time-saving and
convenient, considering complex procedure including going library and searching
books to get books in need.
Lastly, the lecturer claims that digital
library will be one of the main cause of intellectual property trespassed. Easy
to access e-books will make people not to buy paper books anymore. Moreover, it
can bring a matter of infringing copyright. Even worse, copyright violation
will discourage writers’ desire to author books, and this will bring a decrease
quality of publishing new books. No more great books cannot contribute no more
intellectual world. Therefore, the reading passage's point that digital library
encourage people to be intellect is wrong, according to the lecturer.
