People in Korean, my country, are worldly famous for asking for things done fast and there are many people putting much value on finishing work as soon as possible. Though contemporary creed is to be expeditious in all fields, this should be taken with a grain of salt for the following reasons and I prefer getting slower in dealing with any problem.
First of all, hurrying up has the great possibility of making things clumsier than they used to be. Many people are inclined to finish up their works both to feel the sense of achievement and to savor the rest of free time. But, on the contrary, the more you scurry, the more trouble you will be entangled with. To illustrate my own experience, when I was working office during my compulsory military service in Korea, I was asked to do many different typing works. Since I was disciplined harshly and pressured, I scurried to make a product, which was rejected by my senior due to the lack of sophistication, such as typos. Only with the wisdom of hindsight, I felt then that it would have been much better if I had taken enough time to review the product. Thus, though paradoxically may it sound, taking one’s time is to bring better results and to economize time management.
Secondly, living unexceptionally under the constraints of time will leave anyone’s life devastated, while those who are living up to their time, no matter how slow they might be, make their life more prolific. As people overwhelmed by the concept of goal-orientation do show the habit of doing things speedily, they trade other invaluable components of their life, such as friends, family, and hobbies, for the quick achievement of career and so on. In the meantime, free from the pressure to be hasty, one can adorn their life with a lot of things – friendship and love - found on the course to the goal. My experience of teamwork during my college days proves this suggestion. Participating in a competitive teamwork in the class, I was chosen to be the leader to guide my team successfully. Other teams churning out a bunch of reports updated online, I as well as my team was more intrigued in socializing and hanging out with each other teammate. By doing so, team spirits had increased and my team could be the top-tier in the class. Therefore, taking calmness in the course of life will lead you to more successful and abundant life.
To conclude, being speedy does more harm than good to us. It makes us blind to our surrounding which cannot be underestimated in our lives. On top of that, doing fast doesn’t guarantee the fast result at all and sometimes is less than being clumsy. As a result, I suggest that taking enough time to tackle any problem is the wisest strategy. (Word Count: 479) |
