Some people argue that individuals can do something about environment issues despite of its complexity. On the other hand, others insist that individuals' effort can do noting about environmental issues. I think there is nothing for individuals to do something about environmental issues. To begin with, due to the complexity of environmental issues, action related to theses issues can result in unexpected outcomes. It means that individuals efforts can lead to meaningless one or even it can make the matter worse since they don't have professional knowledge. For instance, my cousin invested in rasing ducks to replace pesticides in his farms. He anticipated lower level of contamination on lakes which were originally damaged by chemicals. However, the outcome was not the same as what was expected. The wastes from the ducks actually clogged the water supply system, and also contaminated the water at the same time. He carried out this investment to solve the environmental issue, but the outcome was totally opposite. We can figure out that individual's effort toward environmental issues without proper knowledge can lead to deterioration of the environment. Secondly, efforts of individuals are usually trivial things since environmental issues are so complex. It means that their effort cannot make significant improvement since the complexity of the problem is too great. For example, even if you decided to save the water and you made the significant saving, total amount of water usage in your country might not be changed since your effort was really tiny at your nation's view point. It means that there exists great complexity in water saving problem which results from various water consumers from different areas. Due to the complexity of the environmental issue, your effort did little thing on solving the issues eventually. Consequently, individuals cannot make considerable changes in environmental issues since their efforts are usually too trivial to make changes and also they sometimes make an unexpected outcomes due to the lack of knowledge. It is important to give efforts on environmental issues by government, not by individuals. |
