There may be pros and cons regarding the argument that
Parents do not understand children as well today as parents understood children
50 years ago. I am in complete disagreement with this argument. In this paper,
I elaborate on the two strongest reasons for my position.
First, modern parents know about their children more than
ever. This is because parents today play critical roles in developing their
children's untapped talents. Modern-day children live hectic lives, because
today's globalized society is increasingly competitive and constantly changing.
As a result, it is difficult for them to discover their personal interests and
pursue their fields of study that they prefer. This makes it crucial for their
parents to help them develop talents and tap into their full potential.
Therefore, today's parents have a greater impact on their children than parents
in the past. According to a recent CNN daily podcast (2013), the surveyed
education experts at Columbia University said that children today who are under
the close guidance of their parents decide on their future careers and develop
their talents faster than those who were not years ago. The majority of
surveyed education experts argued that children are likely to become
unproductive if they do not fully receive the care from their parents,
especially when they are in their developing stages.
Secondly, parents nowadays spend more time understanding
their children than those living in the past times. This is attributed to the
fact that parents today, with their years of life experience, can offer lessons
on morality and ethics. Some of today's children who are still mentally
immature have a long way to go before they become grown-ups. During this
journey, they tend to make many mistakes, and therefore, are prone to
misbehave. However, they can be guided by parents, who can teach them about
etiquette and social norms, and can thus become good models for society. In
this respect, modern parents pay attention to their children more than their
counterparts of the past. For example, children these days may give into the
temptation of using drugs or online game addiction because they are too young
to judge right from wrong. This is why parents' involvement is an urgent need.
With the guidance of parents today, youths can learn how to avoid such
temptations and become law-abiding citizens, by listening to parents'
descriptions of their own experiences. Through such lessons, they can become
holistic beings.
Because of the reasons explained above, I strongly
maintain that today's parents understand their children more than parents 50
years ago. They help develop their children's untapped talents and provide lessons
on morality and ethics. |
