Nowadays, students are swamped with all kind of tests in their lives and sometimes it can be overwhelming for them. Even to join a soccer team, students have to tryout for that position. In this situation, some might says the environment in which students are always tested on is pressuring the students. Although I think this is sometimes right, in most cases, students actually enhance their skills through tests. The reasoning behind this is that they are obligated to prepare for them and also, the results can tell the teachers which method to use.
To begin with, students have to prepare for the exams in order to get better grade. If there are no tests or evaluations, I am sure that no one would want to revise their notes or ask the teacher about the work. At least there are tests for the students so it gives them certain objective to learn. In this situation, the objective for the students might be just getting good grade. All in all, they will revise and learn that subject profoundly. To illustrate this point, when I knew I will be tested on my physics class at the end of the year, I payed attention to the teacher, took notes during class and even made a study group to enhance my grade. Nevertheless, when my art teacher told me that I will be solely graded on participation and my attitude, I didn't gave too much effort on that class but to be there on time. Likewise, if students know that they will be tested on that subject, they will be more focused.
On top of that, teachers will have better idea how to teach the students. When teachers teach their students, they are usually not sure if their students fully understand that part. With tests, teachers can personally evaluate the understanding level of each students and apply the best method for each students and even provide counciling for students who suffer in their class. For example, I once suffered in my english class because the reading materials were difficult for me and the lesson pace was too fast for me. Of course, in the test, the results was disasterous because I didn't got the concept at all. My teacher called my after class and talked to me about the result and how to fix this problem. He suggested my to take a private session with a tutor. The solution actually worked because after that, my grades went right up. With the test, the right method for each students can be found.
In conclusion, students need test in order for them to study their materials in classes and for teachers to find the right way to lead their students. On the whole, students do better if they are graded on things. |
