A thought provoking current issue concerns
about happiness of today’s people. Some people believe that people these days have
happier lives as technological development and revolutions made their lives
better. However, I strongly believe that in earlier period people were happier.
This is because they had closer relationship and active communication within
the community, and they received much lesser stresses regarding competition
over studies and getting jobs.
To begin with, people in the past
interacted much actively with other people. Neighbors formed amiable
relationships. They shared good foods and helped each other when someone needs
help. Contrastingly, people in today rarely interact with their neighbors. Even
people often don’t know who live in the same floor. Also, there are lots of recluses,
who just stay in their houses without interacting with others. For instance, in
Japan there is a term “Hikikomori”, which is used to refer to people who are
recluses. They fear to leave their houses and meet people outside. They spend
years desperately in small and confined rooms. This became a serious issue in
not only Japan but world widely. This example fragmentally illustrate modern
people are living in unhappiness in cold-hearted world.
In addition, people today get much greater
stress due to increased competition in the society. The structure of the modern
democratic society emphasizes the mind that “Winner takes all”. People who are
more intelligent are more likely to survive in the workplace and therefore,
have successful lives. There may be exceptional cases, but such ideology is
widely spread and accepted by most people. Thus, students compete relentlessly
to get better grades in tests. Employees complete to get promoted to the higher
position. In this competitive society, dropouts have no place to stand. This
leads to miserable life overall. For instance, there was an accident that an offender
attacked citizens who were just passing by in Yeuido, Seoul. Professionals
analyzed the reason for increased such random crimes and found out that those
criminals were failures in competition. As they got too much stress from
competition, their stresses exploded and resulted in such awful crimes. This
example corroborates that current society is giving great strain to its
citizens.
In conclusion, I firmly insist that people
in modern society are getting great hassles from several outer forces. Fast
changing world made people busy and thereby, intimacy that people shared in the
past disappeared significantly. Moreover, severe competition is giving stresses
to people. These problems must be resolved to improve the quality of lives of modern
people.
