▶ Your Answer :
The lecturer argues that the living roofs, or green roofs do not have much advantages as expected. This refutes the author’s point that green roofs have advantages that conventional concrete roofs didn’t have.
To begin with, the professor mentions that without accessibility, the increase of total area of parks in the city would be meaningless. The professor had been to a city with parks of top of the roof, but he wasn’t able to visit any of them. This directly contradicts the idea mentioned in the reading passage that rooftop areas of large buildings can be used to solve the problem caused by lack of park areas in city nowadays.
Second of all, the lecturer living roofs do not offer spectacular views for people. Although the roofs themselves may be beautiful, people walking on sideways wouldn’t be able to look at the rooftops of buildings. The professor gives his own example, that he lives in a city with lots of green roofs, but he never had a chance to enjoy the beautiful views of green roofs. This refutes the point made in the passage that living roofs offer great view for many people.
Last of all, the speaker believes that living roofs are not economically profitable. There will be expenses for installing, managing and repairing the roofs, so it will outweigh the cost savings from saving energy. This cast doubt on the writer’s idea that green roofs offer cost savings because they save energy.
