▶ Your Answer :
Most
of the people think that government should focus on poverty issues in the
country rather than protecting the environment. However, I believe that we
should give a priority to the environment because poverty issue is an everlasting
problem which we could never solve. On the other hand, in order to protect the environment,
we only need to manage the surroundings we see. Moreover, a clean environment helps
a lot for the country to advance in many ways.
First
of all, history has shown that the economy follows cycles of ups and downs, but
that is not the case for the environment. While the economy can be boosted
within a few years by government policies, environmental destruction cannot be
reversed even by the best policies. Therefore, protection of the environment
should be given priority over any other issue. For example, nowadays, Amazon forests
are being destroyed at a record pace. The process is so rapid that almost a
fifth of the entire Amazon has been cleared so far. The process of
deforestation has a far-reaching effect on biodiversity, too. Many animal and
plant species lose their habitats and become extinct. One study estimated that
it would take more than a century to fully restore the forest, while most of
the destruction has taken less than twenty years. Because the surroundings are
the most important source we have, we have to protect it fiercely.
Secondly,
a clean environment is closely linked to development in many other areas of our
society. Many people believe that the benefit of environmental protection is
confined to the environment and is unrelated to other fields. However, many
cases show that the environment is a solid foundation of development in other
areas. To illustrate, dense forests in Canada are indispensible to the forest
product and tourism industry, two major cash cows in the nation’s economy.
Moreover, in many countries, forests play a pivotal role in improving public
health. They provide fresh air and health food. They also function as a place
to take a rest from busy lives in the city, helping people to release stress
and offering them peace of mind. If we destroy our environment, it would mean
that we never think of our future of our country.
In
conclusion, I think that governments should invest more in protecting the
environment than in addressing poverty issues. The reason is because it is
better to solve an issue that is solvable and it would be more effective to our
country’s development if we protect the surroundings.
