Today, there are numerous types of communication such as letters, text-messages, and so on, thanks to advanced technology. Some might say letters are best because letters contain the writer’s efforts and true feelings that are hard to be spoken, and usually they are touching. Others might insist text-messages are best due to its speediness and easiness. However, none can be same as face-to-face communication.
Those who think letters are the best way to communicate, often mention time and effort consumed on letter to support their opinion. But almost same effort is also put on face-to-face communication. One has to trim his/her hair, choose clothing, and clean his/her faces to meet someone, in order to show respect and be polite. According to your companion’s feature, you can judge how he or she thinks about you.
Another problem of letters is that you cannot be sure whether the writer is telling truth or not. Face expression, intonation, and hand gesture are so called ‘lie detector’, and letters show none of them. In a same term, letter’s gallant word and expression can touch your feelings, but its sincerity is questionable. One can write a long sobering apologize letter with a wicked face!
Some prefer to use text-messages in social activity. They are attracted by its simple and rapid way, which is necessary in modern fast-moving society. However, this simple method can make our relationship ‘simple’. I once saw a newspaper caricature; in a past day friends met and chatted, these day friends meet and text. Shallow relationship is a major side effect of texting.
I believe that the meaning of “communication” is more than just a conversation. Speaker’s attitude, tone, and especially eyes are equally important. There are also this probe about eyes, that “eyes cannot lie.” Which means you have to see straight into persons eyes to figure out how he/she truly feels. And the only way to do so is meeting people in real world, not through electric devices or other people’s hand. Therefore, I totally agree with that face-to-face communication is better than any other communication. |
