▶ Your Answer :
In this argument, some people agree that grades encourage students to learn. Moreover, some researchers may cite the fact that some surveys illuminate a cause an effect relationship between efforts of students and grading system. However, this argument is problematic for the following reasons; First of all, student efforts for learning can be achieved by other ways. Moreover, grading system that most schools operate can do some harmful effects to students.
Some people assume that grades can stimulate students to learn at school. However, people provide no evidence to support the assumption. In fact, this is not necessarily the case. For example, there is a possibility that learning achievement of students can be caused by other factors. In other words, the argument that grading system can be helpful for student’s learning is vulnerable to the criticism that other factors, such as helping to find interest of the particular subjects or sense of self-achievement are more effective ways to learn. Moreover, the grades can influence the atmosphere of the class in negative ways. According to a survey, conducted by the Harvard Business review in 2012, grading students can motivate students to do unnecessary competitions so that most students cannot learn cooperation with others, which is essential perspective especially to growing children, but learn ways of competition, which defeat other classmates.
All things considered, because the argument that grading is a good way of learning for student leaves out several key issues, it is not completely sound or persuasive as it stands. To strengthen the conclusion of the argument, the argument should include the above-mentioned assumptions and provide evidences to support these assumptions. Therefore, I disagree with the idea that grades encourage students to learn and I firmly believe that students can learn by other effective ways, motivating themselves to learn at school. |
