Various opinions may exist over the thesis
that people often buy products not because they really need them but because other
people have them. As far as I am concerned, I believe that the thesis is true for the following two
reasons.
Due to the advancement of technology,
especially the Internet and SNS in modern days, we are revealed to lots of
reviews of products, which their friends left on their SNS, and this stimulates
people to buy something impulsively. Since the advent of SNS in our lives, it has been much easier to show off a fabulous life to others or sometimes make a mundane life seem like a fantastic one. Given this situation, many
people are likely to envy them or long
for such
lives. Consequently, in order not to be
left behind their
friends or be better than them, people often purchase products even though they
really do not need them. Sometimes, people are persuaded by the reviews which
their friends uploaded about some stuff on SNS. When they read the posts, they
feel like their lives without the things are meaningless even they have lived well
without the stuff. This explains why they run out to buy it as soon as seeing
the posts.
As a job market becomes more competitive
than ever, people buy products which are not that necessary for getting a job,
and the only reason of this is the fact that others have them. Today, people are
forced to face fierce competition in the
job market since
there are too many candidates with not so many jobs available. This situation
makes people try to do everything as far as they can to get rewarding and suitable jobs. As
one of these efforts, they buy luxury suits
and shoes, and other applicants follow this trend. However, clothing is not a critical
point when companies evaluate candidates as long as they wear suitable clothes
for interviews, and the jobs are not for some fields where companies put values
on appearance.
Taking all of these reasons into consideration,
people should admit the thesis is true since people often impulsively buy something
that others have when they see other's review on the Internet, or they try to
get a job. There is no doubt in my opinion.
