Students are 'produced' in a factory called 'school'. Like every machine-produced goods is similar, students in current traditional education system is alike. They sit in their desk and inactively hear to lectures of teachers without any thoughts. However, as the society rapidly progress, the education should be revised and restructured to be suitable for a new era, information era. In my opinion, for that purpose, allowing students to talk on classes will be indispensable since it could heighten students’ productivity and creativity.
Student-oriented education will increase efficiency of teaching. From the past, people placed too much emphasis on importance of teachers, granting them to have a duty to determine what or how to teach. They neglected the differences of the individual and students passively accepted the education from teachers. However, the individual has different talent, intelligence and characteristic, which should be considered. In this sense, when students have opportunities to express what they learned and understood in class, teachers are more likely to meet the needs of students. They could help students who could not follow up the class or lead knowledgeable students to get a high-qualified education. This will increase overall productivity of classes because the education will be based on one's various aptitudes, personalities and necessities.
Moreover, students could have creativity. Rather than passively listening to lectures, thinking about the teaching will enable them to think more broadly and deeply. They will learn how to think logically by discussing their opinions with one another or with teachers. This is mainly because students want others to be convinced with their thought. Surprisingly, this process is actually measurable. According to Seoul University research, when students talk about certain subjects in school, their brain activity increase up to 30 percent. In other word, the more they think, the more knowledgeable they will become. They will naturally learn how to think more logically and differently than others who did not participate in student-centered education. Thus, I believe students should talk in their classes which will be much more beneficial.
In conclusion, I firmly believe student-centered education is better in terms of efficiency and creativity. However, even though it is better, that does not means it has no side effects. Giving too much freedom to students might deter themselves to concentrate on studying. Moderation is the best. |
