There are different opinions regarding which factors cause the human’s life span to be lengthened. It is a widely accepted fact that there are too many factors to count how many factor the span is affected by. Even so, I strongly believe that the most influential factors are two historical events, the industrial revolution and improvement in medical science.
First of all, the industrial revolution is the major cause of it. Before the revolution took place, people had no choice but to spend much time working by hand and accept their danger during their work time because there was nothing to substitute for them. However, the revolution became the groundwork to invent various kinds of technology that made it possible for machinery to play a role of human. I will explain it in detail by making an example of machines. With researchers developing how to generate electricity and how to make manufacture processes more efficient, the revolution considerably affected the invention of machines. Since machines were invented, people have been able to take their time to enjoy leisure and to take care of their health because inventing machines gives them an opportunity to put dangerous works to machines instead of them. If the revolution had not occurred and machines had not been invented, people would have had to do dangerous works by themselves, by which human’s life span would have decreased.
Second, the improvement in medical science is a key factor in lengthening the life span. As medicine-related technology is improved, the rate of deaths from diseases becomes reduced. Because most people die of diseases, the medical development is required to make it possible for people to live longer. Many diseases, which people could not cure several years ago, can be treated suitably with the new technology. For example, just several years ago, it was thought as expected results that most people who suffered from cancer would die. However, with the treatment being developed through doctors’efforts and the improvement of medicine, it becomes possible to treat cancer. Not only do cancer patients get confidence to be cured of it, but also doctors actually save a lot of people’s life. If researcher had not make an effort toward the medical improvement, a number of people would have died of illness.
In conclusion, based on what I have just mentioned, Iam convinced that if not for the industrial revolution and medical development, it would have been hard to increase the life span.
