When I was young, I did not know why people read books. I found watching TV is more productive because people could get more information through TV in a similar time-set. Later on, however, I figured out reading is not all about getting interesting information. It is about attitude and midnset: Eagerly trained mind to pursue an uncovered knowledge for oneself. In these days, some people consider reading books merely as a broader field of entertainment. However, as you know, reading has a more powerful and potential influence on people. Therefore, rather than just reading what I really want, I would choose to cover as many field as possible.
First off, reading a book is an indirect experience given by an author. To be more specific, I can not go to a former time such as ancient Egypt or Medival era, but I can picture myself being in those places by reading an author's description and explanation.
Do you know how many books you can read during your entire life? Let me show mine first. I am 20 years old now and have approximately 60 years to live (hopdfully). Let say I read 5 books per month and 70 books a year. Now the result seems to be 4200 books for my entire life. But as far as I am concerned, It is impossible. I probably end up with reading roughly 1000 books at best. However, it is to wasteful to use only one life clingling with such a small number of books out of millions
Lastly, reading a new book is like discovering a new field. You cannot always do what you want to do.
I mean, folloing preference is characteristic of children. As growing up, people have got to abandon their childhood habit and endeavor to meet a global world's interest: diversity.
Especially in such a global world, having a broader sight is no longer a matter of choice, but essential factor in order to be competitive.
This essay is not about bereating a wrong reading habit or giving a special strategy. I just want to make sure the importance of behavior when reading a book. Reading is not just spending time, but unveiling a new chapter of one's own perspective. If people truely understand the importance of reading a lot and experience appreciation of many books, then they definitely would not just be stuck wtih few books they like.
