There has been an argument regarding the issue that human activities are beneficial for the earth. Some people insist that human beings have made the earth better than before because technologies have made it more convenient. Admittedly, a lot of facilities created by human beings seem to be helpful for our daily lives. However, in my opinion, people have not improved the earth, but just have used its resources. Even worse, human activities have harmed our planet. In this essay, I will present two reasons to support my idea.
First of all, human activities have damaged the environment. Actually, we are informed numerous unpleasant news about destruction of the environment, such as damage of ozone layer or water pollution. It is difficult to deny that such unhappy events have been occurred by human activities. For example, studies shows that 40% of forests in Brazil have been disappeared during last 50 years. This is because people have deforested inadvertently in order to get great ranches. Those forests are known as number one source of oxygen in the world. Unfortunately, similar cases are frequently occurred in other areas. Thus, it is evident that human activities are threatening the earth.
Moreover, human interventions have exacerbated the ecosystem. Generally, human beings have changed the environment to use it more efficiently. However, such changes often created unexpected disasters. There are many cases of destruction of food chain, extinction of some species, and so on. To demonstrate, about 40 years ago, Chinese government campaigned to expel sparrows because it thought that sparrows were harmful to agriculture. Therefore most people living in rural areas of China tried to wipe out sparrows and Chinese original sparrows went nearly to extinction. The problem was that sparrows eat not only grains but also worms and insects that are detrimental to plants. Right after the extreme reduction of sparrows, the number of worms and insects dramatically increased and seriously damaged agriculture. Nobody could control the demolished food chain. Finally, the government had to import sparrows from Russia, and in the meanwhile, its land was seriously degraded because of overuse of pesticide.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that human activities have not improved the earth but only used and damaged it. This is because human beings have destroyed the environment and disrupted the ecosystem. It is obvious that people can not live out of the environment. Therefore, we should try not only to use our planet the earth, but also preserve it for the next generation.
