Recently, general awareness about whether life is better than it was when our grandparents' generation has aroused heated arguments. People, nevertheless, have conflicting ideas; while some people say that the quality of human life has been improved, others deem otherwise. From my own point of view, I am in agreement with the latter stand for some reasons. The first reason for my opinion that can be seen by every person is that students are too stressed out about studying in secondary school. In Korea, competition among students has been overheated and most of the students spend all day to study, not only in school but also in various academic institutions. They do not have time to do outdoor activities or enjoy their hobbies. For example, my own sister is a high school student and she is forced to stay at school from 7 in the morning to 10 at night. She often complains that she does not have time to enjoy the life of a teenager. On the other hand, my grandparents often tell me that they had much time to go out to play with their friends in the nature when they were in high school. These accounts prove that the life of students in these days have become much harder and stressful. Another equally reason is that there are more family troubles in this generation. The recent studies have shown that the number of divorces and family discord has been significantly increased in last ten years. These results show that how people less regard the value of family this family. The broken families have been become a serious social problem that governments even are getting involved in solving this social problem. Moreover, there is a new word called 'bird-fathers' which indicates fathers who have sent his family members to other countries, usually for their children to get better education, and stay alone at home. For instance, I read numerous articles about those 'bird-fathers' committing suicides because of the loneliness that occurred from missing their family and being alone. In contrast, 40 or 50 years ago, it was hard to find divorced or separated families. Looking at the statements above, there are many reasons to be considered, but I strongly believe that the quality of life in our generation is much worse than few decades before. |
