Since self-studying with the help of the Internet has been an ungoing trend among students these days, some people contend that schools should spend more money on purchasing computers than on books. Personally, I disagree with the opinion stated above because books are more educational and there are less chances for the students to have access to books than to computers.
To begin with, books offer much more beneficial resources than computers when used as an educational tool. As the Internet is technically improving and becoming sophisticated, students are starting to consider it as a source of entertainment and spend a lot of free time doing many kinds of stuff on the Internet. Thus, chances are that the Internet will hinder students from concentrating on school work and act as a distraction. To illustrate, when I was in 11th grade, my high school decided to purchase computers to make a new computer lab and established computer classes in order to enhance students' learning within various resources. Unfortunately, many students played games, listened to musics and watched movies they downloaded which led them to even skip regular class schedules. In this regard, the Internet would become a huge obstacle in creating a sound environment in school.
In addition, students usually are not able to have easy access to various kinds of books without the help of school library. Nowadays a majority students own personal computers at home but do not purhase books periodically in their daily lives. In this sense, school should ensure opportunities to freely borrow and read books to students. According to a study recently released by the Korean National Research Center, more than two thirds of surveyed high school students who go to schools that own libraries read twice as much more books a month than those who are attending schools without libraries in it. Based on the study, students answered that without the help of school library it would have been hard to read many books because buying all the books they want to read is a financial burden for them and putting much expenses to books that are going to be read once or twice at best is wasteful.
In conclusion, books are more helplful for students who need to focus on their studying. Therefore, schools should encourage their learning by putting effort and money into that helpful educational tool. It is quite obvious that technological excellence does not always ensure educational assistance. |
