"Education is not a preparation for life; education is life." This statement by an American philospher reminds us of the significance of education and an endless debate: the purpose of television. Despite those who argue that television must only serve as an educational tool, television should maintain its current function as both educational medium and entertainment. Children gradually approach educational programs by frequently watching television. Furthermore, its plays a pivotal role in entertaining our contemporaries.
People today engage in laborious works that they cannot rely on relieving their stress by traditional methods. Senior students have more demanding work than ever, adults are suffering from the recent great economic downturn. When their daily lives are burdening them down, they do not have the vigor to passionately use their leisure time to throw away their stress, such as playing soccer everyday after class. For instance, my brother, and undergraduate cannot spare time to go out and hang around with his friends due to excessive school materials. Thus, his best measure to recover from his fatigue is to turn on the television and watch it for half an hour.
Watching entertainment programs on the television do not hinder us to view educational programs. Rather, approaching the television first as a toy box provides great opportunities for us to be exposed to educational programs. For example, in reading books, no parents start reading their children a scientific book at first. At intial stages, all parents pick up a recommended storybook and then move on to sophisticated books. Same applies when watching television. Children begin by watching some disney channels and gradually, as they grow up they become part of the audience that favor news programs.
Television should remain as both educational and entertainment instrument. It acts as a vital tool to recover the distressed minds of many people and provides a foundation for the young to begin enjoying television. Why don't you turn on the television to really experience the great benefits that televisions today offer us? |
