The old saying "Dig just one well" had become obsolete. Nowadays, society is getting sophisticated and it's required to be a versitile multitasker. Even when choosing an actor, producers expect someone with abundant backgrounds rather than plain professional. In other words, people who have extensive knowledge are now more welcomed and highly praised. In that sense, I strongly believe that it's desirable to broad expertise and knowledge widely.
To begin with, broadening knowldge encourages people to discover their hidden talent and interest. To illustrate, my sister who used to specialize in Laws, took 'Advertising' class as an elective in university. She didn't realize that she might be good at advertising until studying. As a result, she turned her major and now works at advertising fields. If she had just continued to specialize in Laws, she would never have found her right aptitude. In this instance, it's evident that various knowledge can help develop intrinsic potentials.
Furthermore, extensive knowledge experience allows for learning from different point of views. For example, I participated in competitions for movie scenario. I worked with some friends having different backgrounds, such as Medicine, Science, Accountings. First time I was uncertained whether we could even make one scenario but we made impeccable SF scenario by using our divergent knowledge. This demonstrates that the exposure to new knowledge could enlarge ability and sight to see the world.
All in all, haviing broad knowledge is requisite to be more grown-up and competent person. Not only it spurs to discover new talent and interst, but it provides more opportunities to learn from different point of views. Consequently, there's no reason to hesitate to challenge new field. Society has been rapidly changing and it keeps requiring people to have new expertise and world-view. It seems much wiser to become flexible curiousity seeker rather than persistent expert, in modern days. |
