Many people think that we need to know a wide range of knowledge and especially, it is taken for granted in case of the university students. That's quite true but my view on this issue is that students not necessarily have to take various kinds of courses in universty.
First, I think that it is not a efficient way to study in university. Today university students have much more burdens for study and job hunting than students of the past dacades. They have to get a high score in foreign language tests, computer certificates, or several years of study in abroad. Also, because of economic crisis, it is not easy to get a job after graduating university. Then, in order to prepare for their major earlier and other things, students may not have enough time to take another courses. Even if a general education is important, we can not ignore fast-chainging society and students' demand in university.
Secondly, students can get various kinds of information by something that is not a class. That is, students can read much books and travel around instead of studying. Sometimes working in a part time job can give more experience to students than taking a course. Also, it depends on the students whether they choose to take another courses or not. They are not high school students anymore.
To sum up, I strongly support the idea that it is the choice of a student whether they take classes in various kinds of subjects or not. |
