As teenagers become conscious of fashion and self-expression, many students feel that schools give them the freedom to choose what they want to wear to school. Some argue that school uniforms invade students’ right. Even though I agree with their position at some degrees, I support the idea that school uniforms are necessary because they conceal economic difference as well as help students more dedicate to learning.
To start with, school uniforms have an important role in concealing economic difference among students. This is mainly because by making students wear only uniform instead of what they want to wear, economic difference is not able to reveal apparently. If they are allowed to wear what they want to wear, students who are rich will wear expensive clothes and boast their wealth. In contrary, students who cannot afford to purchase clothes sufficiently will feel inferiority, spoiling the whole class atmosphere. For example, a high school in Korea is famous for its failed policy that gives students the freedom to wear clothes they want to wear. According to teachers of the school, students tended to get along with students of similar circumstance. They were not able to cooperate. As a result, the school revoked the policy. As this example reveals, giving the freedom to students eventually bring about dissolution.
On top of that, school uniforms aid students to study hard. This is due to the fact that the more they care of appearance, the more they are unlikely to dedicate to studying. The primary role of a school is to impart knowledge to students. Therefore, by requiring forcibly them to wear uniform, they are able to study hard while at least in school. From my experience, during vacation, my school provided optional extra classes for students and allowed them to wear clothes freely. However one of my friends cared about how he looks better and tried to make good impression among the classmates. In the end, he got the worst mark in my class. He just wasted a time. Likewise, school uniforms also have an effect to devote students to studying.
In conclude, because the school uniforms prevent students from feeling economical inferiority and provide them with academic circumstance, I firmly believe that the school uniforms are beneficial. Even though this position also has drawback like invading students’ freedom, Advantages of mandatory school uniforms far outweigh its disadvantages. |
