In the past, the primary goal for most of people was to survive. They neither wanted nor needed to write and read. However, today are era or globalization and era of information, requiring people to have skills in writing and reading. In my opinion, since people have to gain much knowledge and express their capacities to other people for success, reading and writing became more important than ever.
When people want to be more successful, they have to gain much knowledge. I believe the more people become experts in their career, the more opportunities they will have for success. For example, in Korea, companies tend to hire people who attended universities, especially when they are encountering unprecedented economic crisis. Approximately, 94 percent of new employees in 2007 had at least university education. This was mainly because people who had much knowledge could work more efficiently. They had great knowledge in management, economics, computer skills, allowing them to have efficiency on work. Moreover, they were well prepared for businesses with foreign companies. In this sense, since reading and writing skills are indispensable requirements to gain knowledge, those became more important.
In addition, people have to express themselves in form of writings to be successful. Many people firmly believe that an essay could reveal a lot about people. Thus, when people apply for graduate schools, companies or other careers, they have to write many essays. To be more specific, when I read an employment advertisement of Korean Time, people have to two essays regarding their personal goals and life and two essays to express their ability in writing articles. Moreover, when it comes to employers, they have to read resumes carefully to hire people rationally. In other words, reading and writing are necessary for most of people in the word!
In conclusion, I believe writing and reading are more important than the past since people have to obtain knowledge and express themselves to other people. Not to mention that I have to gain qualitative reading and writing skills to have scores in TOEFL! |
