Some universities require students to take classes in many subjects. Other universities require students to specialize in one subject. Which is better? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Some universities require students to specialize in one subject because it is believed that focusing on one subject at a time can bring more effective results. However, I think that universities should require students to take classes in variety of subjects. There are two reasons for this. The first is that when students keep studying same subject every day, all day long, they wouldn’t be able to work efficiently. Also, students wouldn’t get to know about fields other than their majors if they don’t take several classes.
To begin with, students will lose interest in their works and their work efficiency will decrease if they take only one subject, their major. Imagine that you are looking at the books about the same concept over and over again, all day long, every day. You’ll soon get so bored, right? Students would get low grades when they lose interest. For instance, according to a survey by a psychology who specializes in counseling students, more than 75 percent of students felt that they were working in an ineffective way when they took only one kind of class. This shows that taking only one class can decrease students’ interest in the subject.
Besides, students won’t get a chance to know about areas other than their majors they might be interested in because they won’t be able to meet different people. In fact, getting bored is not only confined to studying; students can also get bored when they can’t fulfill their desire to know about something. Restricting the students’ learning field can affect their future life in the world because they won’t know what to do when encountered with different subject. My sister, for example, attended a university that required her to specialize in one subject learned a lot about her major, but didn’t have any fundamental knowledge about other subjects. She couldn’t pass any of job interviews, so she decided to go to another university and take 4 year course again. There, she learned about many different topics and she could successfully make it to her job later. This shows that allowing students to learn about many different subjects can help them enjoy better life after they graduate.
To conclude, making students take one subject only will exhaust the students and affect their work efficiency and grades. Also, students will enjoy better developed life only when they are allowed to learn about different subjects. Thus, I think that it is important to make students take classes in different subjects.
