Both the passage and the professor discuss whether home schooling is truly appropriate for children’s education or not. While the passage states that home schooling may place children at risk, the professor rebuts that home schooling can be beneficial.
Firstly, the passage mentions that children may not be able to cover important subjects, as well as ‘soft skills’ because parents do not follow the standard curriculum. This might negatively affects children when they take standardized tests. On the other hand, the professor claims that home schooling not only covers necessary subjects, but also helps children to succeed. According to the studies, home schooling children achieved scores significantly higher than public school children by actively involving in their studies. What’s more, home schooling children can choose their own subjects that they are interested in; this helps children to acquire better communication skills and be well rounded.
Secondly, the passage contends that children may experience social risks because they encounter less people. Therefore, they may not gain interaction and cooperation skills. Moreover, children who home school are blind from realities of life, thus not prepared for difficulties. In contrast, the professor argues that home schooling actually enhances social ability instead of ruining it. Home schooling children come in contact with people from different clubs, such as sports team and social clubs. Furthermore, home schooling children are more responsible and mature because they spend most of their time with top peers from college and adults. Moreover, a few studies has shown that home schooling children are more resourceful and active.
