Airports, all over
the world and more so those in first world countries exhibit highly enhanced
security systems. Passengers are scanned, probed and questioned in a manner
where suspicion rampant. Through such processes, a fear of terrorism can be
inferred and is seen to have clearly influenced airport security all over the
world. Fear is prevalent and widespread, and also varies in form and how it
manifests. Like the third world countries such as Congo, fears exist, but are
totally different to those in other leading nations. Regardless of who you are,
even if you are a first world country, even if you may be America with nuclear
weapons, like this fear is inevitable and influences all decision making.
Individuals’ fears which can be internal or external, conform our decisions.
These can manifest in both positive and negative ways.
That fear can
influence decisions of individuals, is seen in that individuals with similar
belief systems and their taboos and fears can direct the lives of all
individuals in communities. In this aspect it can be added that fear can take a
common form, and can collectively influenced many people in a similar fashion. Individuals,
who are part of the religious community of Christianity, hold common beliefs
and thus feel the same fear that impacts their decision makings. “The ten
commandments” that can be found in all bible, is highlighted by Christians as a
tenet that foreshadows all decision making in their daily lives which must be
followed or tried to be followed. The consequence of breaking the commandments
is known as departing to hell after physically dying. When I was young, I
imagined the hell as a place where I would eternally burn with devils and it
made me sick even to think about it. As I physically and spiritually grew up,
the scenes altered forming into a collage of horror movies and religious movies
like The Exorcist. Whenever I faced immoral chances such as being able to steal
valuables from others, one of the commandments “You shall not steal” appeared
in my mind. It compelled me to imagine the consequence of the destructive hell.
Like this, the invisible power of the commandments are perceived and them
inducing individuals in Christianity communities’ decision. Therefore a fear is
certainly possible to impact the whole community and thus on the decisions of
individuals who are involved in it.
Clearly, while
fear has the ability of influencing the decisions of the entire communities,
fear can also impact individuals uniquely and hence induce their specific and
personal decisions. Many famous companies progress to manufacture their goods
through idealising from the ongoing trends. In doing so, their profit rises as
they are able to fulfill the customers’ desires. For these companies, they fear
of being left behind the evolving needs of customers. However despite the
spotlighted trends, Steve Jobs, as a businessman, possessed the fear of being
too normal with similar ideas with others. This was unique for him but he
disliked how the trends dominated the world’s market. This fear resulted in him
to construct his own brand with his ideas of inventions. As no one believed
that he could succeed from such a risky decision, he started his company,
Apple, from his small garage without any support. Nevertheless, he invented
many of popular gadgets that are almost a necessity for those in modern
communities, where his unique determination from the fear was recognised by the
public. Steve Jobs’ Apple was nominated by the famous advertising company WWP
PLC as the most valuable company in the world, even surpassing Google. Though
the fear distributed enormous impact on Steve Jobs, the same fear may be viewed
as an irrational fear to others and thus only influenced him. As shown, fear
can motivate and brings positive rewards: whether it does so in a unique
fashion for Steve Jobs, as it does collectively for the Christian community.
Obviously, fears
sometimes conclude as positive results. Yet, they can often result in pulling
negative outcomes from individuals’ decisions. Specifically, fears with the
involvement of loving ones are cruelly influential to individuals and on their
decision making. To prevent any harm for their family or friends, they will
immediately seek for solution regardless the afterward consequence. Niccolo
Amaniti’s I’m Not Scared exposes the wide gap between the Northern Italy
and the Southern Italy in 1970s. The North was extremely ‘rich’ and
economically resourceful. On the other hand, the overriding assumption is that
the South, and, in particular, Acqua Traverse is that it was a ‘place forgotten
by God and man’. This inevitable fear of poverty harassed the whole community
of Acqua Traverse. This fear of the insufficiency was undefeatable and as a
result, the adults of the village gathered and decided to commit kidnapping to
at least survive with their families. Yet, this action of Pino for his family
brings the worse and destructive consequence of crucially impacting Michele who
is only a nine years old boy. He eavesdrops the conversation between the ‘friends’
of his father, and realises that they are the ‘monsters’ who he ‘should be
afraid of’. This devastates his innocent view on the world, which lead him to
view that the society is shattered beyond repair. Moreover he does not accept
the fact that the ‘bogeyman’ that he continuously feared, is his own ‘respected’
father. This indicates how a decision that is made to protect themselves and
beloved families from the severe poverty causes further complex of negatively
inducing their families. This tragic novel displays the negative ending with
Pino who loses the ‘Army game’ and accidently shoots his own son, Michele, with
a gun due to the increase of fear of getting caught by the ‘investigating’
police. As seen through I’m Not Scared, it is that individuals’
determination, created by fear, can bring negative consequences.
Certainly, feeling
fears is an unavoidable natural emotion that every single human being
encounters. They bring various cases of constructing positive and negative
decisions of people. However like the famous philosophical phrase: “if it’s
inevitable, just relax and enjoy it”, we should not always be frustrated with
fears, but attempt to overcome them and step closer to reaching the
happiness. |
