subjects that you're interested in VS subjects that you need to prepare for a job or career. |
It is often said that it is more important to take courses that one is interested in than courses that one need to prepare for a job. Some people might agree with this statement because it is less stressful and enjoyable for students to choose interesting subjects. However, in my opinion, it is better to take subjects needed to prepare for a career than subjects which one is interested in. This is because it helps students to get a better job and encourages them to participate more in classes.
To begin with, classes to prepare for a job are very helpful for students to get a better job after graduation. This is because most companies require practical abilities such as a second language, computer skills, and presentation capability. Students are able to develop and improve the abilities through the courses related with the skills. Therefore, they are highly likely to be employed in a great job. To demonstrate, according to the Ministry of Labor of Korea in 2006, 90 percentage of jobs require either a score over 800 on TOEIC, Test of English for International Communication, or at least one certificate of qualification related with computer. This fact indicates that many companies expect students to have the abilities for the jobs.
In addition, taking classes to prepare for a job motivate students to participate more in the classes. It is common that people do their best on the tasks which they need. In this context, students concentrate more on the classes about job skills and study harder because they know that they need the courses in the near future. To be specific, according to the Ministry of Education of Korea, the attendance rate in the courses such as English, leadership and computer-related courses have been the highest in all classes in universities. This shows that students attend more positively classes which they need than classes which they are interested in.
In brief, choosing courses required for a career is more important than interesting courses. This is because it gives students more opportunities to have a great job and it motivates them to participate more actively in the classes. Of coures, taking the subjects that you are intersted in is important and enjoyable, but preparing your readiness for your future career is more essential for success. |
