There are several ways to express people's thoughts or emotions and choosing the best way of communication is very important to communicate with others effectively. If an approriate way is chosen, then people can fully express themselves and achieve the goal they want. Therefore, I recommend that the best way to compain is talking with the person directly, not sending letters or emails.
First of all, there can be misunderstanding in reading letters. While reading a letter, people are likely to add their own prejudiced thought or imaginations to the original contents, especially when it is something negative. Therefore, people who read the complaining mail can upset about the letter and do not accept the complaints. Last semester, for example, I sent an email to the professor and complained about the class with a wish to fix them. I tried to write it in a polite manner. However the result was totally opposite from what I expected. The professor was very upset with me, because he took it as assaults to his teaching. As it shows, I believe writing has many possibilities to be misunderstood and not a proper way to show complaints.
Furthermore, people can also use non-verbal language which makes the atmosphere more soft and gentle. According to various studies, it turned out that the effect of non-verbal language on the conversation is quite significant. For example, if a person tells the same thing in different facial expressions, the listener tend to understand it in different meanings. Therefore, if people show their complaints with smile face and gentle gesture, they are more likely to be accepted even though it is something negative. Accordingly, complaining in person is better way to tell one's thoughts.
In conclusion, I suggest that the better way to telling complaints is telling it directly. Because, using letter has more possibilities to be misunderstood and when talking in person, we can use not only verbal language but also non-verbal language. Using better way would help people express themselves efficiently. |
