“When people succeed, it is because of hard work.
Luck has nothing to do with success.” Do you agree or disagree with the
quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.
Say, a person goes to the interview to
get into a prestigious school in his community. He has studied hard, so he
doesn’t think he will have any problem to satisfy the interviewer. However, what
happens if he gets into a terrible accident on his way, or simply the
interviewer is too obstinate to be satisfied with the interviewee’s answer? Yes, no matter how hard the man worked, he won’t
be able to get into the university. Thus, people need luck as much as their diligence
in order to succeed: one needs to be in the right place and time in order to succeed.
Many of the authors wrote their book
based on their experience with an exception of science fiction novelist. Willa Cather, a
famous author who wrote stories about Prairies and immigrant society, is one
example of such. Her description of Prairies surely fascinated everyone as the
readers can vividly imagine what the author portrayed. Many of the readers
were, like I was, enthralled by Willa Cather’s meticulous description of
Prairies’ life. What if I tell you the only reason she could portray those
vivid images because she lived in the Prairies? What if I tell you as the first
generation of immigrated family member, it was necessary for her to live in
Prairies? She sure is a good writer, which required her to study at a fine
educational institute to learn how to write. However, without her blissful
memories of the past when she lived in the Prairies, she would not have
composed such a masterpiece—a novel called “My Antonia.” Therefore, although I believe
her dedication to be able to write led to success, it was a pure luck for her
to be in the Prairies which gave her fame and fortune.
As mentioned,
one also needed to be in the right time to be able to succeed. to give you an clear
example, no one will buy an umbrella in a brightening day. This simple fact is
applicable even to the most famous figures, namely Thomas Jefferson and
Benjamin Franklin. They both are famous as of the main composer of impeccable
document called “the Declaration of Independence.” The eloquence of how they
argued against the British officials is so well-received and so meticulously
planned that the United States of America selected that document as the most
significant document in it’s history. There is no doubt that they required such
a high education and experience to compose such impeccable argument. However, what
if they were born when America needed an avail from the British? Historically, their
early settlement was assisted highly from the British. Early settlers were not self-sufficient.
If they were born at this time period, would they be drafting the Declaration
of Independence? I sure hope they wouldn’t take such a reckless action.
Clearly, the time frame in which they were born impacts one significantly.
Although one needs intelligence to succeed and remembered in the history, one
needs to meet the right time period to succeed.
As the old
saying goes, luck is when the preparation meets the opportunity. The diligent work
is required. There’s no dispute about that. However, what if the opportunity
never comes to you? What if the situation never gets better even when you endeavor
to live successful life? Successful life
will be hard to reach. Therefore, one needs both luck and hard work to succeed.
