Many people believe that the indirect connection to student’s major makes an explanation why it is unnecessary for them to take history courses. However, I agree to the statement that all university students should be required to take history courses, for two reasons. First, students are obligated to have clear information of the past and to pass it to the descents. Also, students will be able to learn lessons from the past which will be beneficial in the future.
To begin with, students are one part of the nation and they have duties to know the exact knowledge about the past and convey it to future generation. According to a the research, many proportions of university students are not aware about the events related to their own history. This was shocking to many people because the main reason why the current civilization exists is because that they derived from past events. Students must realize the importance of being aware about their own history and have gratitude. It is an obligation as a part of one nation. Moreover, it is significant to transfer the precise information from the past to the descendant without any distortions. For example, Japan is postulating the ownership of Dokdo Island, which is the property of Korea, and they are conveying false knowledge to their own students. If university students of Korea does not know about the truth due to lack of information, citizens of Korea have to watch their own region being deprived without doing anything. It is important to know about history and I believe that the significance justifies why all university students should be required to take history courses.
Moreover, university students, the future generation who will be in charge in of major roles, can learn valuable lessons from the past events. Even though the abundant information can be easily achieved without considerable effort, some knowledge can only be gained through experiences. Sometimes, facing to the actual event can provide more practical information than just reading in books. The history can be an example of that, either good event or bad one, anything can be essential as a lesson. Horrible past memories such as wars reveals the fact, that people should never make that happen again due to terrible consequences like massacre or devastation. Even things that cannot be controlled with humans’ influence such as natural disasters, can give people lesson by preparing and figuring ways how to respond. In addition, people can learn from the past as the procedures of politics or results from certain policies, and utilize it in the best way. Therefore, concerning the positive outcomes that history can offer, it is necessary for university students to learn history as a requirement.
In conclusion, I agree to the statement that all university students should be required to take history courses. It is natural to learn about the past as one part of nation and pass them to the future generation. Also, past events provide various lessons which are highly beneficial and can be used in a practical way. Even though the importance of history course is being more and more blur these days, every time big event occurs and accompanies with huge influence, people realize the reason why we should be aware of the past.
