It is often said that taking classes for more than 11 months throughout the year is better for students. Some people might support this statement because students are able to learn more knowledge by doing so. However, in my opinion, It is not good for students to attend classes for most of the year. This is because students can learn social skills and widen their view.
To begin with, Taking free time more than 1 month provides students many opportunities to develop their social skills. This is because students are able to do lots of off-campus activities with many people such as part-time jobs and volunteer works. Through the activities, students should interact with other people. Therefore, they develop and improve their interpersonal skills. For example, when I was a freshman in college, I participated in a volunteer team during summer vacation. The team has over 10 people, including students, housewives, businessmen, and athletics. For planning schedule and doing work, there were various different ideas and opinions to handle. Conveying my thoughts and listening to others, I learned how to communication with people who has different thoughts and how to cooperate with them. If I had taken the vacation to just study in library or summer-courses, I could not have learned the interpersonal skills which is essential to success in life.
In addition, experience of a lot of activities off-campus helps students to broaden their perspective. It is obvious that experience of having time with various people who come from different social background helps one to reduce prejudice to different people. For instance, I took a trip to India for 2 weeks when I was a sophomore in college. Before the trip, I thought that Indians are less civilized and have no sense of hygiene because they think of cows as a god and wash themselves in the river Ganges which is not clean. However, while I travel, I saw their high civilized cities, and I talk with them about their belief and values. In the end, I understood their way of life. If I had had no time to take the trip to India, I would have avoided Indians.
In brief, it is better for students to experience off-campus activities more than 1 month in a year. The experiences teach students social skills and broaden their horizon. Of course, learning knowledge is important, but the importance of Interpersonal techniques and broad perspective cannot be underestimated. |
