Q. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All university students should be required to take at least one class that teaches the culture of a country other than their own.
In this global age, it has been suggested that students in universities have to do at least one course in the cultures of other countries. However, I disagree with their view for two reasons. First, other methods such as reading books, going abroad, and making foreign friends are more helpful than classes. Secondly, knowing one's own culture is as important as other cultures.
The first reason for my opinion is that there are a lot of beneficial ways to learn the culture of a country other. This is why students do not need to take at least a course in foreign cultures. No one can deny that taking only courses in universities lacks practical use. In other words, students can better understand foreign cultures by reading various books and newspapers, watching foreign tv shows, traveling and making foreign friends. Let me take my experience as an example. When I was a university student, I took a course in japanese culture that taught the national traits, values and so on. I really studied it hard and got A+. After few years, I had opportunities to work with japanese who did not have characters I had learned in the class. This is because the course I took was based on the past not the present. In this regard, other pragmatic means is better than classes for students to know the cultures of other countries.
The second reason for my opinion is that students need to study not only foreign cultures but they also learn their own culture. As the world is globalized, students feel keenly the necessity of understanding the culture of a country other. As a result, it is easy to ignore their culture, which can cause an identity crisis. It is no secret that knowing both their own culture and other cultures is a powerful source of their development for internationalization. A study conducted by Seoul National University shows that people who place emphasis on other countries' cultures than their own tend to have a weak identity. On the other hand, people who have been successful in the global market fully understand both of them. Therefore, university students should study their culture as well as other cultures not to learn only foreign cultures.
To summarize, student can learn foreign cultures through many useful methods, and although students have no choice but to learn foreign cultures in the age of globalization, they need to study their own culture as well. For such reasons, I maintain that all university students do not have to take at least one course which teaches other cultures than their own.
