The reading passage claims that voting should be compulsory. However, the speaker disagrees with the idea that if voting becomes compulsory, it will bring a lot of benefits.
To begin with, according to the article, most countries with mandatory voting law enjoy high voter turnout. However, the speaker argues that it is true that the places mentioned in the reading have high voter turnout but speaker thinks it is better to have a small group of elites who knows about the issues well.
On top of that, it is also argued mandatory voting is important because it allows us to give consent of governed. On the contrary, the lecturer claims that even though we are not giving our consent to the governed when we do not vote, we are exercising a freedom. When we do not vote, we may express that we do not agree with the running candidates.
Lastly, the reading passage points out that voting should be obligaton because government could not operate , like paying taxes. On the other hand, the professor says that voting should be not considered as taxation because the government would be still functioning without high voter turnout unlike tax. |
