Most students have to take exams regardless of their intention. Many of them complain that they get a lot of stress because of exams. Some radical opponents claim that exams should be abolished for students to learn what they want freely. However, in my opinion, exams are worth continuing. This is because exams are very useful tools to make students study more. In this essay, I will present two specific reasons to support my idea.
First of all, taking an exam is a great opportunity not only to evaluate students’ understanding but also to find what factor they are not good at. Thus, students can realize how much they understand and what subject they should study more. In addition, teachers can catch what area they have to complement for students. For instance, one of my friends, teaching math in a secondary school, did not like the exam system when he was a student. Yet, he became an ardent advocate since he had been a teacher, because he realized how beneficial exams are. Especially, he emphasizes that he can know who are not able to cope with the subject well, so he can give them more attention and help them overcome the difficulty. Not to mention, students can be informed what their weaknesses are and make more efforts in order to get rid of those.
Moreover, exams make students review what they previously learned, and naturally, students who constantly repeat can better understand about the subject. Without exams, there might be fewer students who are willing to review, since repetition of same subject is somewhat tedious. To illustrate, I have taught Korean voluntarily in Singapore. Most of the students in my class were interested in Korean culture and had strong desire to learn Korean. However, soon I caught that none of them reviewed what they learned in the class. This made me upset, so I announced that there would be a test at the end of every class. Surprisingly, they started to review and study harder. Therefore, I realized that exams can stimulate students to study more.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that exams are helpful for students to learn. This is because those offer good opportunities that students and teachers know how much students understand about the subject, and what area they should focus on or make up for. Not only that, exams motivate students to review what they learned before, so they can better understand about the subject.
