Examinations are considered to be a mandatory and unavoidable to all
students studying at any level and field. From time to time, students suppose
that happiness relies on their grade in examinations, so they tend to avoid
examinations as much as possible. In this
perspective, some people argue that exams are so stressful that institutions
should abolish exams in order to save from all the stress students. However, I
firmly believe that exams are required to motivate students to learn, since it
motivates students to compete the course with their peers and give a chance to
look back what they have accomplished.
First of all, what exams provide
to students is motivation for students
to study hard to their best ability. Through the exams, they learn not only the
subject of the exam, but also why they should study, for they will see how well
they did because of their efforts. Namely, the ranking system in tests
motivates students to head for specific goals. The ranking system also creates
a standard for students and serves as a bar of competiveness. From my
experience, I was not great at math compared to my close friend in the first
test, but I was able to study hard in the next test to defeat him. That
situation served as a great motivation for me to study math, so I was able to
catch up with him. Desire to defeat my friend enabled me to study eagerly.
Secondly, exams give an opportunity to look back what we have covered so
far. Reviewing is a principal way to obtain knowledge thoroughly, so exams are
a useful method to review what we have learned during the class. By taking a
exam, students build up more concrete knowledge that they must acquire amid school years. For example, a pop quiz in
my physics class was beneficial for me, because it gave me a chance to review
what I had been learned at that time. I would have forgotten, with respect to
basic physics theory, if I did not take any tests during the class. My
experience shows how test are significant to students.
All in all, exams are necessary,
as it leads students to study hard in order to be a strong competitor in
academics and to have a chance to review what they have learned. Therefore,
examinations should be maintained in the current system for students as a
whole.
