There is an argument about the issue that face-to-face communication is better than the other types of communication. Some people prefer sending an e-mail or giving a phone call because these are more convenient. However, in my perspective, face-to-face communication is more effective than other kinds of communication because of the possibility of misunderstanding in indirect communication and the effectiveness of persuasion in speaking in person.
First of all, face-to-face communication delivers a speaker ’ s intent the most exactly. In general, people understand what a speaker says through not only the words but also the speaker ’ s facial expression and the variation of speaking tone or speed. According to the survey of email users, about 70% of them have an experience that they had difficulties in explaining what they really wanted to say in their emails. They also pointed out that the development of many kinds of emoticon plays an important role as an evidence about the fact that people are looking for better way to express their feelings when they write emails.
In addition, it is easier for us to lead the talk to make a conclusion that is beneficial for us when we talk directly in front of the person. In most cases, people do not reply just after they read the message. When people check the messages, they tend to contemplate on the suggestion or asking in the email more seriously when the speaker is waiting for having answers in front of them. During thinking about the subject, they view the subject with their own angles. Then, it results in the conclusion in the person ’ s position. On the other hand, if the speaker is talking with the person and able to persuade at the moment when the person hesitates decision, the conclusi on can be modified better for the speaker . For example, a student wants to delay the due date of submitting an assignment because of an unavoidable situation, going to ask the professor is better than sending an email.
In conclusion, face-to-face communication helps a speaker account for the speaker ’ s opinion more effectively and does a listener read between the lines more accurately. Thus, the more we have acute and reluctant issues, the more we should make an opportunity to speak in person. |
