A lot of controversy exists whether the news media is a reliable source of unbiased information or not. This is because it all links to the knowledge of the publics toward the society and one's view may change due to just one report from the news. It is true that many people depend on news to gain global information however media is not always the most authentic source because there are some situations that the media is controlled over by the authorities. There are also cases that the information is conveyed incorrectly or exaggerated.
To begin with, news media is related to its own stakeholders like major companies and politicians in order to achieve the citizen’s faith and esteem. Therefore, not only they endeavour after the image making but they also fabricate their image like their oratory skills and manners. For example, in Korea there was a huge event when the government seized the power of the news media so that they would look better to the people, which would lead to more support. This limits the reliability of the reports of the media due to the publics would get biased resource for every piece of information of the government.
In addition the news media attempts to exaggerate the information to make the story more dramatic. This draws the audience's attention which would increase the profit of the broadcasting company. For example, according to the book by the actual reporter in News Company in Korea, the news exaggerates the statistics by increasing the changes of the graphs . The most common case is when there is an election; the media overstates the graphs in order to show the distinct difference between the candidates. The news media considers all their financial situation to the reports they deliver to the viewers.
On the other hand, some people may say that the news media is a reliable source of information due to the fact that the people monitor different media and they can't be dishonest under the guard of the publics. There is also a media watchdog agencies to monitor the news companies whether they give correct information or not. Nevertheless, it is still possible that the authority can take control over all the media and even the media watchdog agencies, if they have enough money to bribe them. All of the media would defraud the people and manage to give biased, unreliable information.
In short, I disagree with the statement that the news media is a reliable source of unbiased information because the reliability of the information depends on the power and they also overemphasises the facts. On the whole, it seems that the media company works by the money rather than the truth. | |
