Nowadays, a variety of subjects are provided by universities, enabling student to learn about a lot of fields. Some people consider having a lot of class is beneficial; while the others think it is useless and waste of time to develop professional capability. I, personally and surely, believe that having many different subjects helps student to discover their own interest and to utilize knowledge in their field of career.
First, by having a chance to get a variety of classes, students can get a opportunity to find out what is their own interest. Many university students actually are not confident on their choice of major. A study conducted recently on Korea showed that many students change or consider shifting their major because they could not find any interest on their subjects and major classes. I, myself had been a very specific example of those students. My major was originally English Literature, however, now, I am taking double major course on English literature and Molecular Biology. I do like English but I could not find interest just on analyzing Shakespeare. I could discover my real interest while I was taking a credit on Neuroscience and Biochemistry. Classes in University life might change a person's life, by getting him or her chances to think about what is their real interest.
Second, acquired knowledge through versatile subject can effect on people's career in positive way. Knowledge on various disciplinary can be effective to people to solve problem efficiently and do work more creatively. A clear example can be provided by Steve Jobs, the CEO of the Apple Computer Inc. Before he dropped his university off, Leeds College, he got a class on calligraphy, which was driven by his curiosity. He learned how to make a beautiful typography through out the class; nevertheless, he could not know where to use it at the very moment. Later, when he started this company, his knowledge on calligraphy came in to play and yielded a neat result on the computer typography, bestowing a great reputation on his product, the Mackintosh. "It was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college," he said. "But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later." This suggest us how knowledge from various subject can work potentially positive way.
In summary, taking diverse courses helps university students by inspiring them to find their real interest and enable them to use their knowledge in positive way. This is especially true in the 21st century where a desirable employee is thought to be a person with creative mind and interdisciplinary. By having many different classes, one can nourish one’s ability, and in terms of “when”, university days are the best time for one to explore a broad spectrum of areas and studies.
