There has been a controversy between teachers, parents, and even students over whether everyone in a group project should get same or different grades. Some people think that everyone in a group should get same credit because it is a GROUP work, not individual work. However, I think that it is very important to tribute each member separately mainly because there are some ‘slackers’ who don't work under the guarantee that everyone will be credited the same no matter how they do in a group, and also because
First of all, when working in a group, not all the members take part and work. People tend to depend on each other and put their work off. Therefore, it'll be unfair to those who actually worked because it means that even the ones who didn't work would get credits for the work someone else did. If everyone were to get the same grade no matter how much they work, then who would want to work at all? According to a survey, more than 80 percent of students had an experience in which they had to do work for other students because they didn't participate. Do you think it’s fair? Everyone probably thinks of the same answer. The answer would be NO, and it is very unfair that someone who didn't work get credit. They don't deserve it. That’s why each member of the group should be honored or rebuked in different manners.
Besides, giving different grades to each member will bring a competitive atmosphere and a good result. In order to get good grades, all the team members will try to work as hard as they can. As everyone knows, the harder people work, the better the product will be. For example, when I had a group presentation, the teacher said that everyone will get same credit for the poster, but the real presentation would be graded individually. Therefore, everyone had to practice their own parts for good grades, and the overall presentation went smooth. This proves that grading students individually can help them work better.
To summarize, students can put their work off and believe that someone else would do it for them, which means that basically no one would want to work. Also, giving individual grades encourages students to work harder and produce a better result. Therefore, I think that teachers should grade students individually even if it is a group project.
