People learn more by watching television than reading books. |
Nowadays, we are constantly exposed to informative sources such as books, television and internet. However, there has been an argument recently regarding whether people learn more by watching television than reading books or not. I believe we learn a lot more by watching television considering that it covers much broader range of issues and enhances our understanding by providing us with visual aids. First of all, television covers wide range of topics from politics to environment. Unlike books that often focus on one specific field with much detailed information, television programs such as news and documentaries offer extensive information that are more general in overall. For instance, when I was writing a research paper on special adaptations found in sea-birds, most of sources were from books. However, I had a chance to watch the documented film on television that dealt with the same topic, and soon realized that television provides us with broader view points as well as issues which are much different from detailed yet limited information from books. Furthermore, watching television enhances our understanding by providing us with effective visual aids. As we watch television, we can thoroughly understand materials it is covering through various visual aids in contrast with books that are often composed of extensive texts with less pictures. For example, when I was learning Anatomy in high school, I had hard time memorizing and understanding essential body parts, overwhelmed with great amount of texts. However, when we watched a video that lasted for about forty minutes, I was much more drawn into the issue and understood better than before. In conclusion, I believe people learn more by watching television than reading books because it provides us with much wider range of topics and improves our understanding of the issue through effective visual aids. We are living in a society in which television became indispensable part of our daily lives. It is time for us to accept that television can be used as effective and educational media rather than confining ourselves to books. |
