Generally speaking, first impression has been important for people. However, a lot of controversy exists over whether first impression is truthful or not. While some argue that first impression usually tell about people correctly, I strongly believe that first impression is not credible. This is because first impressions cause much more misunderstanding than truth. On top of that, it changes over time.
To start with, I believe that first impressions bring about misunderstanding. This is because they do not reflect people’s inner qualities like character. People’s appearance is just up to their taste. Some people might be interested in making them look better. In contrast other might value other aspects. That is, people whose appearances are not good do not mean that their attitudes towards life are bad. My colleague who has a grim face best illustrates this point. He has a threatening look, especially his face. So when I saw him for the first time, I felt that I did not want be friendly colleague with him. However, I was able to see that he was a warmhearted colleague when I knew that he had made a donation for the poor and how kind he was to other people.
He was also so social that he became the most popular among colleagues. Likewise, first impressions do not usually show people’s characters.
On top of that, first impressions change as time goes by. This is due to the fact that first impressions do not reveal people’s genuine mind. In the other words, people need time to judge and evaluate correctly. According to survey researched recently, most respondents said their spouses had changed a lot compared to their first impressions. This is because their first impressions were artificial in order to gain respondents’ good feelings. As this case reveals, First impressions can be intended and change as much as one likes. Moreover to know correctly about people, lots of time is needed.
To summarize, first impression are untrustworthy because they do not always provide reliable information about people’s inner qualities. Moreover, first impressions are not enough to judge and assess people correctly. For these reasons, I strongly believe that people should not rely on first impressions. It is wise for people who see others for the first time to try not to lean toward first impression.
