Topic: teachers should not make social and political views known to students in class.
Some people may say that since teachers are public figures and their behaviors can make a huge influence on students, they should not make social and political viewpoint known to students in class. However, the Constitution guarantees that teachers, as one of constituents of the republic, have a right to express their opinion and they can play the role of nurturing children ‘ability of thinking rationally on a political or social matter.
First, teachers should freely show their view on a political or social issue because it is granted by the Constitution as a right of heaven. If they are prevented from expressing their own viewpoint on some issues because they are public figures and the issues are too delicate ones, it is equal to seriously undermining their right as a human being. In the case of Korea, the Korean Constitutional court has already ruled it unconstitutional to put a limit on teachers' expressing their political viewpoint. Therefore, teachers should be able to show their attitudes towards some delicate issues related politics or society.
Second, teachers can promote students' ability to think rationally and reaching a consensus on knotty issues. Teachers can suggest what is making conflicts and which stances are confronting each other. It is by all means possible for teachers to guide students to reach their own conclusion even though they reveal their stance on a matter previously. What is important is not that they should not unveil their stances, but that they should lead students to form their own attitudes and to be able to suggest the reason why they reached the conclusion with their own discretion.
In conclusion, it seems plausible that teachers' role to keep balanced viewpoint is very important. However, it does not mean that they should not reveal their own stance on political and social matters.
Rather, they can actively encourage students to ponder on the matters and why they think like that by expressing their own opinion. Therefore, I believe that teachers need to express their view on thorny issues related to politics or society.
