It is often said that professors should focus on researching in order to teach students the best and latest knowledge. However, I do not agree with the previous statement for two reasons. First, the professor’s real duty is to teach students – not researching. Also, if professors are too into researching, they do not have enough time to prepare class or teach students.
To begin with, professors should focus on teaching students because that is their real responsibility. Real job for the university professors is teaching and leading students. If instructors do not do their jobs, schools will become chaos. Teachers should know what their priority is and do their best with it. For example, according to the Korean times, almost 80% of university students are expecting their teachers to instruct and to guide them. Plus, 40% of the students agreed with the idea that the best researching data does not effect on one’s teaching method. Students were showing high respect to their instructors in this statistics. The professors should meet their demands.
In addition, researching takes a long time - it takes away much time for teachers to prepare for the class. Because teachers are also human (humen?), it is impossible for them to prepare a good class with various materials and do the research. For students, it is much better to receive feed-backs from teachers. To illustrate, I have an uncle who just became a university professor. Because he was so enthusiastic with his job, he tried to do the research for his own career and prepare a perfect class. However, all these works were too much to him. He was overwhelmed with it and finally, he got sick. After he took a rest, he realized that those were too much. He decided to focus on _teaching_. Of course, after the semester, he did a great job in teaching and (the?) students loved him.
To conclude, professors should focus on teaching – not researching. This is because professors are responsible for _teaching_ students – not researching. Also, professors may out of time and under stress to deal with both jobs which are teaching and researching. |
