주제는 보노보와 침팬지에요.
리딩에서는 보노보가 평화롭고 온순한 동물이라는 의견
렉쳐는 보노보의 과격한 성격(?) 을 설명하고 있어요.. 침팬지편을 든다고 할까요...?
The lecturer believes that the commonly accepted idea that characteristic about chimpanzees and bonobos is misguided. This contradicts the reading passage’s argument that bonobos are relatively more docile than chimpanzees.
First of all, the lecturer says that it is proven by a researcher that bonobos in wild forests are as fierce as chimpanzees. She says that they were found throwing sticks, shaking fists, and fighting in wilderness. This goes sharply against the reading passage’s claim that bonobos are always gentle and docile by nature.
The lecturer then points out that young bonobos are always accompanies by an adult, and this causes other bonobos not be able to attack them. In contrast, young chimpanzees are often alone and therefore vulnerable, and that is why adult chimpanzees are found attacking others’ offspring. This refutes the reading passage’s idea that bonobos’ affectionate attitude is the reason they don’t attack young ones.
Lastly, the lecturer claims that human activities are to blame for the carnivorous diet of chimpanzees. Chimpanzees actually prefer fruits but they had to include meat because humans drove them out of their territories. The lecturer thinks that bonobos would also eat meat if they were in the same situation. This casts doubt on the passage’s arguement that bonobos eat fruits because of their docile instinct.
