▶ Your Answer :
Opinions might be divided whether
scientists should be blamed for the negative impact of their discoveries. People
from different walks of lives may take different stance on this controversial
issue. Personally, I believe that scientists should be protected from the
criticism for problems that caused by their inventions for the following two
reasons.
First, more often than not, it is hard for
the scientists to predict all of the ramifications that their research might
have. These days, society has become so complex with various field
interconnected with one another in ways people do not realize. Therefore,
things do not seem to follow the rule of cause and effect, and sometimes deeds
done out of good intentions backfire and end up with disasters. In this regard,
If the intentions were good, scientists should not be subject to criticism for
the negative results of their discoveries. For example, Alfred Novel, inventor
of dynamite and founder of Novel Prize, is said to have regretted to make
dynamite because the dynamite was used for the weapons in World War 1. However,
his original intention for the dynamite was to make easier to construct mines
or caves. He was reported to say that he had no expected the use of dynamite for
making the weapons that killed many innocent lives.
Also, If the scientists were subject to
criticism for the negative impact of their discoveries, they are not likely to do
any research and finally this deters development of science and whole society. Developments
of science have changed our lives dramatically and scientists always have done
their part. However, if scientist were criticized for the negative impact of the
problems that they do not expect, they would lose motivation to do their
creative research. For example, If the car inventors have been subject to
criticism for car accident and environmental pollution, they had not kept their
research continually. However, No one deny the fact that cars are now one on the
best inventions in the world. If they had stopped inventing the cars, we could
not have the convenient to travel, shop, commute to work throughout the cars.
All in all, because of two reasons mentioned
above, I strongly believe that scientists are not responsible for the negative impact
of their discoveries.
