It can be controversial topic among students. Since some students think that learning many subjects needs a lot of time and it's efficiency is not good. There is some truth in what they say.
Even though it is reasonable, I agree with studying broad knowledge because of two reasons.
To begin with, it is helpful to study many subjects. For example, in my case, I have taken mathematics class when I was a sophomore in university although I was majoring chemical engineering. Of course, the grade of mathe class was not good, but I obtained many mathematical skills and senses. As my major needs these, I could study better thanks to it. Also, many textbooks are written in English, so I had to spend a lot of time to study English. By studying English hard, I understood books well and got a good GPA.
In addition, society demands job seekers to have various abilities. In other words, you may fail if you have only one skill related with your major or interest because companies deal with many things like maketing to other country or building factories with concerning environment. To illustrate, engineering companies should consider environmental problem and build factories in MiddleEast or Africa and so on. To meet their needs, applicants must know about social issues or problem of environment and have foreign language skills. Without it, they will not hire you because your ability is too narrow to use.
In conclusion, although learning many subjects take a long time, I recommend that students study broad knowledge. It is not only benefical to understand your major better but also necessary to get a job and show your ability to society. |
