I agree with the topic that high school studnets should wear uniforms because it can prevent the prejudice caused by the type of clothes students wear, and also it can teach students the comformity our society require.
When I was a middle school student, I witnessed a miserable tragedy happend to one of my best friends. This friend, Dongwoo, was just like other children except the fact that his family cannot afford many clothes. Naturally, he wore the same cloth over and over again, and other classmates picked that up. Ridiculously, just because he was not able to alternate his attire everyday, children made fun of him. Due to this accident, Dongwoo got depressed and his characterics became extremly introverted.
On top of the fairness uniforms can provide, uniforms can also teach students what our society is like. Even though the degree of the required comformity would be different according to culture and nation, there certainly is a comfirmity people expect to others when we belong to any type of social entity. Understanding this is very important, as not meeting this expectation could bring isolation from majority especially in my country, Korea. For example, in Korea, people show respect to their boss or elderly by bowing our head down. if you do not follow the custom of showing respect, instantly, you will be marked and regarded as an uneducated person. It tells us that, as a social being, there are certain customs we should follow, and uniforms can help students understand the existence of these customs.
Having high stduent wear uniforms without their concent can be seen as a means of suppressing students. However, we should think about the other side of coin. As I witnessed, there are sensitive students who can be unavoidably and unreasonably critisized if studnets are allow to wear any clothe. Also wearing uniform actually can help students understand the underlying, and most times irresesistable requirements of society. So I believe, it would be better to have them wear school uniforms. |
