Governments should impose "congestion fees," tolls for using roads during rush hours
Although a number of people have already recognized that the world resource stock is falling down, they do not seem to change their attitude towards the resource. In other words, the reality of staggering number of cars on earth is still a huge problem. In this situation, it is often said that the government should promote "congestion fees", tolls for using roads during rush hours. In my opinion, this is a perfect idea for solving environmental problems and saving time on the roads.
To begin with, congestion fees can solve many environmental problems. With the fear of obligation on paying tolls for using cars during rush hours, it is obvious that people would use less cars. Furthermore, this phenomenon can lead to resource nursing, especially fuels, and the protection of environment. As a matter of fact, there once an estimation on how effective congestion fees are, environmentally. It said that if the Korean government impose congestion fees, the concentration of exhaust fumes in the atmosphere can be dropped by 40%. This data means both of the ideal state mankind can ever imagine and the bright future the world can ever face, but still is possible.
Not only the environment but congestion fees can also benefit the human. Once carefully considering the way of mitigating traffic jams during rush hours, traffic engineers could finally came up with the idea of congestion fees. They strongly demonstrated that congestion fees would mitigate traffic jams hugely. In 2005, the Korean government actually promoted congestion fees in three different cities, and the result was staggering. As traffic engineers assumed, a complaint index about traffic jams in rush hours was lessen by 52% in that year.
In brief, congestion fee can overcome its drawbacks by its advantages, by benefitting both the environment and the humans. For the environment, congestion fees would mitigate the pollution index and the fuel uses. For humans, they would shorten the driving time during rush hours. All in all, for the better future, we should be hurry in promoting congestion fees.
