Opinions vary regarding whether it is difficult to tell who is telling the truth or what is the truth on the news. I agree with the above statement for the following two reasons. First, the truth can be understood and conveyed by people’s telling the fact own views. Moreover, mass media sometimes distorts and hide the truth to make profits.
First of all, people tend to understand and convey the truth according to their own viewpoint. In these days, people are flooded with a lot of information. The problem with this is that it is difficult for people to distinguish whether information they have contact is right or not, because information are understood and informed by conveyors’ own perspective. Take the Iraq war as an example. When the Iraq war broke out, some of my friends argued that it is an only way to protect world peace against peace-breaking enemies. Also, they believed that America had done its best to restore peace. In contrast, others disagreed this statement. They criticized the war and blamed The United State as an invader. As the Iraq war illustrates, we can find out that information can be differently considered by people’s own views.
In addition, to make more money, mass media can conceal and distort the truth. In general, people always expect that mass media inform correct truth. However, because mass media is interested in making profits, they will often exaggerate or fabricate the information they present. In this context, it is hard for the public to expect that mass media provide them with the truth. According to a study conducted by Korea National Research Center, 64 percent of surveyed journalists answered that they sometimes overstate the news in order to stimulate people’s curiosity. Also, they often hide the dry truth of the news which does not attract the public’s interests. Based on the study, they have no choice but to exaggerate and conceal the truth of the news in order to make profits and to stir people’s curiosity.
In conclusion, we are not likely to know about the truth in our society since the truth is understood and conveyed by conveyors’ own perspective and mass media tend to distort and hide the truth in order to make their more profits. |
